Abigail Hernandez Returns Home Safe

A 15-year-old New Hampshire girl who disappeared while on her way home from school nine months ago is safely home with her family, the state attorney general said Monday.
Abigail Hernandez was reunited with her family on Sunday evening, July 20, 2014, Attorney General Joseph Foster said.
Foster said the family has asked for privacy. He said Abigail's mother, Zenya Hernandez, told authorities "today we are the happiest people on earth."
Police said Abigail was last seen Oct. 9 after leaving Kennett High School in Conway. Police said she walked her normal route toward her house and sent several texts between 2:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. But she never made it home.
Police did reveal several months ago that she had written home to her mother. When the letter surfaced, FBI Special Agent In Charge Kieran Ramsey said there was the possibility that Abigail had run away but that someone could still be coercing her into staying away from home.
In a brief statement, Foster said the criminal investigation in Abigail's disappearance will continue.
After Abigail disappeared, police initially said she made it home, but later said she hadn't. Police also at first said she made a call about 6:30 p.m. that day but later said that, too, was wrong.
After she vanished, police consistently said they had no evidence to suggest anything suspicious and were treating her disappearance as a missing-person's case.

Despite the effort, the toddler remains missing, and the FBI is offering the money incentive for her return.
"We are confident that information will be uncovered which will lead to Myra's return, and we continue to solicit the public's assistance in locating this little girl," said Daniel McMullen, the FBI special agent in charge.
Madison County Sheriff Randy Tucker told CNN affiliate WAPT that he believes the little girl is in the area.

Abduction of baby ends with Pa. State Trooper killing suspect

Pennsylvania State police praised a trooper for saving the life of an 8-month-old by fatally shooting the man who they say held the kidnapped girl at knifepoint and used her as a shield during a wild chase on Sunday that ended at Pittsburgh International Airport.
“He took the life of a man who decided not to respond to our verbal commands,” said Trooper Robin Mungo, a spokeswoman for the agency, which is investigating the incident with Allegheny County police. “The trooper saved the baby.”
The unnamed officer fatally shot Jared Brown-Garnham, 21, in the head in a car at a gate on the Moon side of the airport about 2 a.m. Mungo said Brown-Garnham was the ex-boyfriend of the child's mother, whom she did not identify, but was not related to the child, identified in an Amber Alert as Bailey Fergurson.
Brown-Garnham was originally from Massachusetts. Relatives could not be reached.
The shooting followed a series of crashes involving gates on the cargo side of the airport, but it did not affect operations there, said JoAnn Jenny, a spokeswoman for the Allegheny County Airport Authority.
“This did not take place near the terminals, and he never got inside the gate. There was no disruption at the airport,” Jenny said.
Trouble began about 11:15 p.m. outside a pizza shop and convenience store on Route 51 in Brentwood, where Brown-Garnham and the child's mother got into a fight.
“She ran in and out of here about 15 times,” said Sabo Ajdinovic, who was working at E.M. Pizzeria. “She pounded on the freezer, got down on the floor and told me to call 911. She said that ‘he will kill my baby.' ”
The woman was with a boy who was about 6 and the man who took her car. Brown-Garnham never entered the shop, Ajdinovic said.
“She was fighting with him. He was trying to put her in the car, and she did not want to get in,” he said
He said the woman said she was from West Virginia. He did not know why the two were in Pittsburgh.
George Fiske III, a funeral director in Brockton, Mass., who said he knows Brown-Garnham's family and handled his mother's arrangements in October, did not know why the man was in Pennsylvania, given that the rest of the family lives in Massachusetts.
Police issued the Amber Alert about two hours later for a 2000 Toyota Avalon with a West Virginia plate, telling officers to look for Brown-Garnham and Bailey Fergurson.
Mungo said she did not know why two hours passed before police issued the alert.
Ohio Township police spotted the car in Neville about 1:25 a.m. and chased it to Moon, where Brown-Garnham rammed several security gates on Hangar Road at the airport. Police said he threatened the child with a knife while crashing into police cars, putting the knife to her neck and using her as a shield.
“He wasn't trying to get a flight. He probably didn't know where he was,” Mungo said.
When the car became hung up on an airport barrier and Brown-Garnham kept pressing the gas, a front tire caught fire. Officers approached the car, and the trooper shot the suspect once.
Brown-Garnham died in Allegheny General Hospital, North Side. Fergurson was taken to Children's Hospital in Lawrence-ville for treatment of neck injuries from the knife and was released about 8 a.m.
Mungo said the trooper would not be placed on leave or investigated.
In May, Garnham-Brown testified as a witness in a murder case involving a Taunton, Mass., teenager who was stabbed to death in 2010, according to the Taunton Daily Gazette.

Federal and state authorities won't say specifically why, but they think a letter purported to be from a New Hampshire teenager missing for nearly two months might in fact be the real thing.
Abigail Hernandez was last seen on October 9, according to the FBI, as she headed home from her high school in the town of Conway, and officials fear she might be held against her will.
"We are concerned for her safety," New Hampshire Associate Attorney General Jane Young said Friday at a news conference called to discuss the search for the girl.
"She is not out there alone. She has somebody who is either helping her, whether that be a friend or what we fear is a foe."
At the news conference, authorities revealed that Abigail's mother, Zenya Hernandez, received a letter on November 6 that appeared to be from her missing daughter. That letter was kept secret until Friday, said Young, because "law enforcement had to take every possible step to verify its authenticity.
"And at this juncture, we believe in fact that it was written by Abby and was sent to her mother," Young added.
Neither federal nor state authorities would discuss the contents of the letter beyond Young saying the writing is in "a tone Abby would have used," and that the letter underwent "expert analysis" before its existence was announced publicly.
Officials also said revealing details about the letter could potentially trigger "copycat" letters that would slow down the investigation.
The letter was written on October 22, and postmarked on October 23, according to Young, and it was turned over to authorities for investigation after Zenya Hernandez received it nearly two weeks after it was postmarked.
"When we received this letter I will tell you it was unprecedented. We have not seen anything like that in recent times in other investigations, but most importantly, it gave us hope," FBI Special Agent Kieran Ramsey said at the news conference.
Neither the girl's mother nor the rest of her family has had any contact with Abigail since the letter's arrival, said Young.
Authorities said Abigail had no source of income, and on the day she disappeared she did not have winter clothes with her. Police released photos of a pocketbook and a necklace that were believed to be with the teen when she went missing.
Officials from several law enforcement agencies asked that members of the community be vigilant and pay attention to their surroundings, in the hopes that someone will spot Abigail and alert authorities.
"We are asking you look at your neighbor. Look at the girls next door. Look at your church. Is there somebody that you haven't seen before?" Young said on Friday.
Initially authorities believed Abigail's disappearance may have been an abduction, and continue to believe that she may be being held against her will, but nevertheless they are continuing to classify it as a missing persons case, as all possibilities have not yet been ruled out, according to Ramsey.
Information and tips on Abigail's disappearance are still flowing in from members of the community and law enforcement officials asked that anyone with knowledge of Abigail's whereabouts contact authorities.
"We need to reunite this child with her family," concluded Young.
